Multistage Pumps: All You Need To Know

About Multistage Centrifugal Pumps and their Maintenance

Pumps for Factories

Rated among the most common pumps, centrifugal pumps are widely used in industrial and water facilities. A centrifugal pump is designed with a rotating impeller that facilitates the circulation of fluid within a casing. It then directs the fluid to a discharge pipe or outlet. Centrifugal pumps are classified as either single or multistage.

A centrifugal single-stage pump only has one impeller that rotates around the shaft and generally produces relatively low discharge pressures. Multistage pumps with greater pressure are created with two or more impellers. At CNP pump, we purpose to supply quality multistage centrifugal pumps.

Multistage Centrifugal Pump

In recent years, multistage centrifugal pumps have gained immense popularity. The ability of multistage pumps to provide engineers with a flexible spectrum of flow and head, together with their higher degree of energy efficiency, has made them a preferred choice for many industrial applications. The significant difference between a single and multistage pump is that a multistage centrifugal pump has more impellers and generates higher discharge pressures.

A vertical multistage centrifugal pump is basically a multistage medium fluid or gas conveying device. The flowing medium can be liquid, gas, or a mixture of gas/liquid, and suspended particles that enter from the inlet (blade shaft root). The pump depends on high-speed rotation. As the flowing medium enters, the blades acquire centrifugal force to create high pressure that flows out of the outlet (pressure relief port).

Small in size, compact in structure, and beautiful in appearance, the vertical multistage pump is very versatile. Its vertical structure ensures that the installation leaves a small footprint. Its center of gravity is designed to coincide with the foot pump center, thus enhancing its running stability and service life.

Applications of Multistage Pump

A multistage pump is generally used with water as well as other low viscosity liquids/fluids. This feature, when combined with their inbuilt high-pressure range, makes our multistage water pumps useful in the following applications:

  • Boiler feed
  • Water supply boosting
  • Water circulation
  • Reverse osmosis
  • Fire fighting
  • Irrigation
  • Heating/cooling conditioning
  • Multistage Pumps

    Maintenance of Multistage Centrifugal Pump

Regardless of the bearing type used in the centrifugal pump body, generally, there are two types of bearings; sliding and rolling. Both need to be well lubricated. To reach the bearing's inner contact parts, it's best to use oil film the lubrication.

The critical thing is to ensure that the lubricating oil being used must be as recommended by the pump manufacturer. It's worth pointing out that you need to avoid adding excessive oil to the rolling bearing during the overhaul or maintenance process. It's known to trigger a significant drop in heat dissipation performance, eventually leading to a bearing's malfunction.

Installing in the wrong direction also deteriorates the bearing's lubrication condition, thus shortening its service life. Other parts susceptible to wearing in a multistage pump include the oil cap, sealing ring, and gaskets.

    Conclusion

Because of their relatively simple design, the use of centrifugal pumps is extensive. However, because of their tight impeller clearance with the pump volute, these pumps cannot cope with solids and other abrasive content unless they are oversized. This is why we at CNP pump recommend that you only use them with water and other fluids classified as low viscosity fluids.
